The 3rd entry in our animated scans from the Paytons catalogue rescued from 1890 focuses on the banjo.

The banjo’s journey is far richer than you might imagine. Before it became synonymous with bluegrass or folk, this instrument was born from pure ingenuity and resilience. Its first iterations were actually crafted by enslaved Africans in the Caribbean and American South, adapting instruments from their homelands.

Fast forward to the 18th and 19th centuries, and the banjo was firmly embedded in American folk. It eventually made its way to Victorian Britain, becoming a music hall darling and a parlor room sensation. By 1890 in the UK, the banjo was everywhere—from the rowdy (and now rightly condemned) minstrel shows to elegant “classic banjo” clubs that elevated it to a serious classical instrument.
